changing from gas hob to electric hob

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.23 PM

im switching from a gas hob to a electrical hob on the advice of a hotpoint engineer ad i have limited space for my built in double oven i had to firstly cap the ga pipe off so that the new one will fit. because of this im getting a electric hob to match. the old gas hob was connected to a plug, will i be able to connect the new electric hob to the same plug or will i need to get someone in to wire me a new socket (which is not ideal as i dont really want to rip the kitchen apart for one socket) any help is much appreciated.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Would be a big help if we knew what kw rating the new hob is? Hobs don’t usually plug in. The plug that was serving your old gas hob just did the ignition spark. I suspect you will have to have a separate supply put in for the hob due to loading issues. Therefore you will need to get an electrician involved.

There is no reason you couldn't keep your old gas hob or replace for a new one if your prefer gas. its a relatively small job to alter the pipework if needed £65-£80 I'd imagine would be the average price, I have done many of these type of alterations my self with no problem. It may actually cost more for an electric hob to be installed if a new power supply is needed. I would at least try the new oven in position first as you may find that changing the hob is unnecessary all together. That said as a gas fitter, I prefer induction hobs to gas as there easy to keep clean and much safer if you have any children as the surface only heats up if a pan is on them, but don't forget you may need new pots and pans as aluminum ones wont work on them.

If your oven is currently using the exist 32A supply and you want an electric hob the a new 6mm cable will need to be installed as an electric hob will draw up to 25A (an induction hob over 30A). Installing an additional 6mm cable will greatly increase your options as what to have.
