Is there a fault with the appliance or fusebox?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.23 PM

Hello I’ve had a couple of instances in the past where the fusebox tripped, cutting all power in the house. I presume this is the RCD tripping as it cuts everything? I reset it by turning the dial a quarter turn back to the ‘ON’ position. Originally I thought we may have had mini-power cuts but have now realised in both instances was when the washing machine was on. I didn't originally think it was to do with the washing machine as it's been running a few times since and in between with no tripping. Is it likely a fault with the washing machine (which is 7 years old) or likely I would need an electrician to look at the fusebox/RCD? Many thanks

Could be earth leakage on washing machine. Try switching the spur of from the washing machine and load everything back up

Best to get an electrician capable of measuring earth leakage of entire property, and testing correct function of RCD. A couple of hours tops to narrow it down

It does sound like it's more likely the washer but an Electrician would test the rcd to rule it out before replacement.

Possibly, however if you only have a single RCD for the whole house, this contravenes the wiring regulations, this was done to save money on installation costs. As wiring gets older the insulation can decrease, with ALL of the installation on one RCD is a recipe for problems. Had a similar problem with the same set up, his just tripped occasionally when back home in Italy, he used to come home to defrosted freezer etc. The best thing to do is have the consumer unit upgraded to a metal RCBO board which will provide you with separate RCD protection for each circuit, then if there is still a problem, you will know exactly which circuit is giving you the problem.
