Shower Outlet Elbow on uneven tiles.

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.23 PM

I’ve come to fit the shower fittings after tiling but hit a small worry. Fitting the shower outlet elbow over uneven slate/brick effect tiles, as I’m turning the elbow to screw into the pipe work, it’s catching on the higher peaks of the tiles! I’m worried it’s not screwing in far enough with out me scratching or damaging the tiles or the elbow fitting? The elbow thread is 28mm and the depth from tile peak to the inner ridge of the pipe fitting is about 32mm.. (pictures available) I think someone didn’t take in to account for the uneven tile thickness! :( If I wrap enough PTFE do you think it will avoid possible leaks? Or should it be ok if I just screw it as far as possible without scratching the tile? https://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q569/TwennyP/IMG_8474_zpsnfpasgns.jpg https://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q569/TwennyP/IMG_8473_zpsi1gjpwdb.jpg

Use a tap extension, tighten fully with out any ptfe, that way you will be able to gauge how much the back plate sticks out. Measure the distance. Cut the thread. Use locktite55 as it’s better then ptfe. Then seal with silicone! Jobs a gooden! It’s only an outlet so it doesn’t hold pressure!

It's hard to provide an accurate answer without seeing the type of shower valve you are installing, but I will hopefully provide some help. Generally, any compression type fittings need to be tightened as tight as possible by hand then given a quarter to half turn with a spanner, if you can still untighten by hand then it will most likely leak. The shrowd should cover over any scratches made by the backplates.
