What to use to lay marble hearth?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.45 PM

I have just bought a new marble fire surround to be used with an electric stove. I have been told that I can use a tile adhesive to fix the hearth to the floor boards, can anyone shed any light on this, or even narrow down to which tile adhesive please. Any help would be great 😊

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Depends on what is below to bond to. If traditional boards you can staple a wire mesh to key to and stop it debonding with expansion/contraction. You can also use schluter Ditra matting to do the same. And in all cases use powdered flexi floor tile adhesive plus flexi additive for good measure.

Normally I would use sand and cement mix as it’s a much sturdier job and if the floor is out of level then it is much easier to level up as if it’s not level then it will show up on the mantel when you put the legs on top of the Hearth

I would suggest using stone sealer on the base of the hearth first just to prevent any damp patches coming up through then use a flexible floor tile adhesive. I've often just pumped a few more screws into the floor boards if they seem overly bouncy.
