Tiling

Do I need a 28 day curing period if I am only tiling on top of a re-concreted 30cm wide trench?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.44 PM

I have cut a 20-30cm wide trench underneath the house to relay the main drain and have back-filled and now re-cast the 100mm concrete slab. I will lay the 50mm screed shortly. I will lay ceramic tiles onto the screed but need to know if the full waiting times apply to avoid problems with moisture or shrinkage. I drilled and resin-fixed 10mm rebar into the sides of the trench before casting the concrete. FURTHER QUESTION: I have found that Weber have an adhesive that can be laid on green screed. Has anyone experience of using this? https://www.uk.weber/tile-fixing/tiling-green-screeds-or-concrete

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Duncan - you will need to allow the concrete enough time to settle and cure, 28 days is recommended allowance to give 90% cure which will prevent shrinkage and drop in the trench. Also the floor screed should be allowed the dry time of 1mm per day. Obviously these times have variables including atmosphere and weather conditions, will cure quicker in summer than winter months.

Yes you need the curing time I would also give the trench time in case there was any settlement

You can tile straight away, if you either use green screed adhesive or put a uncoupling matt like schluter ditra 25 over the area .
