Budget kitchen installation
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.25 PM
Looking to replace our fitted kitchen in an old terraced house with budget units from maybe iKEA or online retailer impact furniture. I have read they don't have a service void but one way round this would be for the fitter to fit the units 12cm away from the wall (to build a gap) and overlap the worktop?. Has anyone done this and does it work ok? Also would I need to get a plumber to change the water inlet/outlets for the washing machine so we can have a dishwasher also or would the fitter be able to do this? Thanks
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Service void can be created as all is flat pack.
New appliance feeds etc completed during installation.

You can obtain budget units with service voids, therefore avoiding pack outs and wider tops ,which will end up costing more.

The biggest void you will ever need is 50-65mm to accommodate waste pipes running along walls. Use a 650 worktop and create a void where required.

Service voids are used by many kitchen suppliers to make it easier to fit replacement kitchens into existing property without worrying to much about disturbing the existing power, water and waste.
If you buy a kitchen without a service void - eg ikea - you will end up with a neater job if you remove old pipe work and cables and re run through the cabinets, in the void under the cabinets or chase into the walls.
As well as taking up more room, moving all the cabinets away from the wall may result in them being less stable - cabinets are screwed to each other and to the wall to keep the finished kitchen rigid.
