Do we need to wait to lay tarmac following pipework excavation?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.25 PM

Hello, we have just had water pipes replaced under the driveway, this required a trench to be dug the length of the driveway. This has now been filled in, and we have been advised we must wait between 3 and 4 weeks before we can get tarmac laid to properly cover the area, to allow the new material to settle etc. Does this sound right, or should we be looking to get the drive covered as soon as possible? We are planning to get the top layer re-laid across the whole drive, given the extent of the digging that has taken place, rather than just patching, if this makes any difference? Thanks.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I’m sure if necessary services are below ground level it will be fine to apply Tarmac on surface

You would be better off waiting for the disturbed ground to settle as this could crack the tarmac after being laid and spending thousands on a new drive you wouldn’t want that to happen

If it has been properly compacted in layers then it shouldn’t be an issue.

Depending on the type of ground/infill material, and the depth of the trench, it can indeed take a long time for the ground to settle. Seasonal weather will also affect the infill - was it dry or wet when the trench was filled- was it compacted in layers (as it ought to have been) - I would wait longer than the 3/4 weeks suggested

You be better waiting for excavated ground to settle, before doing any finish surface work to drive. Tom
