Joist strengthening?

Alright fellas, I'm going to put an office and some storage in my loft (3.6 x 4.8) will be a floored attic and not an official room, will I need to strengthen the joists (7"x2") and if so what the easiest way and whats best to lay as the flooring? Cheers

You need a structural engineer to do a design. £300 ish and you will know 100% then.

Hi if you’re going to take out the roof struts these are the timbers supporting the roof then you need to build a little wall under the purling and so you will need to double up every other floor joist or if you can every one

The rule of thumb in inches and feet is half the span plus 2” so if your span is 3.6 metres which is roughly 11 foot 9” you need 8x2

Depending on which way the joists span.if the 3.8 way then they are big enough.very unusual though.most ceiling joists being 4" , sometimes even 3".
If 7" and spanning the 4.8 way there is usually a spine or load bearing wall that the joists also bear on , that and gluing the flooring to the joists and the tongue and grooves will stiffen it up somewhat ,acting a bit like an exoskeleton. Hope this helps
