Mosaic tiles in the kitchen?
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.25 PM
I am thinking of having a detailed mosaic tile pattern in the kitchen like you get in Parisian cafes. How long would something like that take as I can't be without the kitchen for an extended period of time.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Depends on Complexity of the Mosaic, but tiles are 1 day for adhesive 1 day for grout to set so 3 days if off existing pattern. If mosaic is on walls no need to close kitchen at all. If on floor would say start centre leaving space around to access sink etc... initially whilst set pattern... use mosaic mats and work pattern in clockwise direction in spiral break down complex patterns onto graph paper if doing individual tiles.. place sheets on floor first so you have look at effect before starting to ensure is what you envisioned.lay mosaic tiled in squarevtoo match do it takes less time laying... taking time too plan first ... saves lot of mistakes and should be laid in a day once prep work done.. allow 2 days for complex patterns.. apply adhesive too tile sheet first then lay mosaic on that. Once area done make sure last row ends at edge on kitchen on on side... next day grout from left up, down, up den etc so again end without walking on titles .straighten as necessary then leave full 24 too 36 hours to set then clean and polish any movement over first 2 days is easy to rectify ..

Hello,
The timescale would depend on the following; the amount of tiling required, whether old tiles are to be removed, the wall/floor preparation needed to create a suitable surface, the cost of tiles etc...

There isn't enough information to answer that accurately.
Questions I'd ask to answer that accurately would be:
1. How big is the kitchen?
2. Where are the tiles going? Splashback or full wall?
3. Are they mosaic sheets or individual patterned tiles?
4. What surface are they being put on? You can quite happily tile over tiles as long as you key the old ones first, it's the flatest and most level surface you'll get, although this may not be possible due to other factors such as where you may have units or finished edges stopping you from adding trim.
If the walls have no tiles and it's a good surface, then it will be much quicker.
Prep is half of any job. That's the most important thing to remember when pricing work. How long depends on how much. Time is the only way tradesman estimate any job and that is based on the number of tasks.
The way to ask the question would be:
I have a 12square metre kitchen (3 metres by 4 metres) with a splashback area across
two walls about 30cm high.
How long would it take to do that?
Or:
I have a 3m x 4m kitchen and want to tile the entire room with mosaic tiles floor to ceiling around all of my units and appliances. Attached is a photo of my kitchen. How long would that take to do?
The most accurate answers can then be provided.
However, you won't be without a kitchen for any time if you hired me, I'd make sure you had full use of it unless I need to remove any appliances in order to do the job. Then this would depend on whether it could be placed somewhere else temporarily or done at the right time to ensure that area is completed as not to disturb your kitchen needs.
However, expect disruption on any job which every honest tradesman will tell you. So it's not the best environment to cook in for example but it's possible if cleaned.
If you were a multi millionaire or a sheikh, I'd suggest building you a separate kitchen so there is no disruption to your life at all. But you'd need the space!
But most folks tend to suffer what happens due to extended costs.
And also, specifics are an essential part of building works. Details.
What does extended mean? If the job was done in 1-2 days depending on full size or spashback surround, (which it can with rapid set Adhesive and grout with enough tilers) is that your definition of extended?
So we'd need to discuss your definition of extended.
You are clearly (and why not) a fickle and particular customer, so what you should do is post the job here and ask the tilers that come to see your home, how long it will take and see if they can give you the service you require, most can. This is a also free service so take advantage of it! You have zero to lose except time, but youll gain knowledge for this time so it's a fair exchange.
Unless you live on the Isle of Wight, I can't personally help but I might know a guy!
We all do in the building trade!
So just ask us....on site.....not online : )
