Connect an electric hob 7kW and an electric oven 2.4kW

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.50 PM

Gents, I have a 32A supply and replacing old units with news ones. The new devices are : an electric hob 7kW and an electric oven of 2.4KW. Please can you let me know, to double confirm, if the above total power of 9.4kW can run from the single line of 32A with MCB? Thank you Alex

Not bad practice at all! After applying diversity to the hob and oven you can have up to 15kw on a 6mm cable & 32 amp MCB. The bad practice is actually ‘plugging in’ an oven into the kitchen ring or radial, resulting in possibly overloading an already loaded kitchen circuit. Table A4 IET Electrical Regulations or On-site Guide apply here as both appliances are thermostatically controlled the likelihood of them pulling full load all the time, that’s why diversity can be applied to cooking appliances. But not to stuff like showers as they are rated at full current load. Your stuff is perfectly ok to have on your existing set up. My edit. You are right that no 6mm cable is mentioned. I’m just stating what is possible as a 32amp supply was mentioned as the OP *could* have a 6mm cable. The same as he *could* plug the cooker in.

Your total load on that circuit is 39A when all plates are in use, such as Christmas day. This will require a 10 Sq mm cable direct from a 45A mcb in your consumer unit.

Bad practice. Oven and hob must be separate. ( oven could run off the kitchen ring main ) hob definitely needs to be on its own though. Updated. I suggested the oven ‘Could ‘ be plugged into the kitchen circuit depending on its loading. But it IS good practice to run them separately as I said. It also DOESNT state there is a 6mm cable and as you know a 2.5 mm Cable could be rated at 32 amp if it’s a ring main.

9.4kw equals over 40A, so for me I would say no. It's is common practice to have both the oven and hob on separate supplies. Regards

Bang on Deacon. No one seems to think right any more. And regs clearly state not to plug an oven into a ring.

You can do this however you can not use both at the same time, only all plates on the hub or the oven, not at the same time.If you want to use it together you will need a 45A MCB with a 10sq mm cable.
