My door is JAMMED SOLID so do I need a LOCKSMITH, or a BUILDER OR A JOINER
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.50 PM
There is nothing wrong with the lock I dont think The last time this happened I had a Locksmith who shaved some of the old wooden door, He should have come yesterday but failed to show up What should I do please?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I would definitely go for a locksmith
A locksmith will have specialist tools to open the door without damage,
A builder may force the door which could result in the door being damaged

Hi,
It appears due the hot weather, the wooden door has expanded again. As wood is a living organism, expansion of wooden doors are very common during the hot summer months.
We recommend inserting an airbag wedge pump towards the entry point of the door frame besides the nighlatch (assumimg it's a traditional wooden door) and create a small gap for the mica card to unlock the latch. If the customer is already inside the property, they can pull the lever down and apply the safety button keeping the latch retracted.
Once retracted and deadlock disengaged, we would insert an additional airbag wedge pump on one entry point above and another at the bottom entry point. We will create a smaller enough gap and apply a some mild pushing pressure with the palm of the hand and opposite shoulder at the same time. If the customer is in the house, they can assist by applying a small pulling pressure from the inside (via a handle attache) all at the same time.
Some locksmiths may use the spade, but we do not usually recommend them on wooden doors. We like to gain entry by minimum invasive force (non destructive), reducing any potential damage of the property.
We are confident that with a bit of persistence, and applying more pressure or gentle force (if necessary), the door will eventually open.
Thank you.

If door is Jammed on the wood because it's potentially swelled then the lock should be fine. Needs prising open and shaving again. But checking hindges haven't become loose. Then the lock can be checked out works ok

either of the three trades you mention could help you out but i would suggest you went for a carpenter who would have the tools to plane the door correctly. It is important the door is planed from the hinge side and then have the hinges recut back into place and also to paint or seal the door where it has been planed so you stop moisture penetrating into the timber which will cause the door to expand again and you will be back to square one.

Scince you say someone once planed some off it then i guess its a wooden door,so if your lock is a yale type nightlatch then you can obviously see whether or not the lock is working similarly you should be able to see the bolt of a mortice lock moving as the key is turned if all the locks are proved to be working then the door has probably swelled and is just 'jammed ' wich a bit of force to the edge of the door with a strong shoulder or an appropriate crow bar should open it

Locksmith is definitely the greatest option, as Jammed doors normally point towards Faulty Locking mechanisms or receivers.

I would definitely use a good locksmith over a builder.
As a locksmith we specialise in these problems everyday and have the expertise, tools and knowledge to get the job completed.
There are many Locksmiths on this platform but look at feedback, speak to the locksmith and agree a price to carry out the works and always get a receipt or invoice once the works are completed.
I hope this helps

I would recommend a locksmith.
Locksmiths will have special tools that in many cases can gain entry without causing damage to the door or frame.
It could simply be the wood expanding.
Call a locksmith who doesn't charge a call out fee and they can recommend to you the work that needs to be completed on inspection.

It depends on why the door is jammed.
If it's due to a problem with the lock, then a locksmith would be the best person to call. They have the necessary tools and expertise to diagnose and fix issues with locks.
If the jam is due to damage to the frame of the door or the hinges, then a builder or a joiner may be best suited to help. They can assess the damage and determine if the frame needs to be repaired or replaced, and they can also fix or replace hinges if needed.
In either case, it may be worth calling a professional to take a look at the problem rather than trying to fix it yourself, especially if you're not experienced with DIY repairs.
