Home driveway automated hardwood gates
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.50 PM
Gates were installed 12 years ago and over the years have dropped significantly. Occasionally they now catch stones on the ground when operated. Is there a solution to raise/resolve or do I need new gates?

Electrically operated timber gates can be problematic for many reasons (including poor fitting). They need looking at by an expert to understand the cause of the problem. Timber gates weather and joints become weak which can cause the frame of the gate to wrack and drop, losing its rigidity and squareness, even slightly. Wear and tear in the hinge and return and control mechanism can also be a source of problems particularly if equipped with floor springs and pivot mechanism. There could be some wear and tear in the hinge and pivot mechanism particularly in the nylon pivot ball and socket located at the heel of the door on the swinging and hinged side of the gates. One cannot rule out the fact the gates may have been bumped at some point and pushed out of alignment. Needs close looking at, careful diagnosis and be guarded against unscrupulous and ill equipped, inexperienced operators.

You can fit a spring loaded gate wheel if the surface of the drive is relatively flat. This will give support to the gate.

The works required to improve the gates will depend upon the automation type that you have, i.e. a pivot set in the floor or bar set across the mid point of the gate. After time, these hinges will be under strain as they carry the weight of the gates, and will need attention. Rather than replace the gates, this sounds as though the automated system will need review and amendment/replacement. Having worked in security and for the Police, I am familiar with these type of systems.
