Installing decorative fireplace into tenement flat

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.23 PM

I I have a 1900 tenement flat and the original fireplace has been plastered over. I would like to open this space up and create a decorative fireplace, but not sure of which trade can help. Thanks.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If you do not intend on using the fire, then a good handyman, would be able to remove the plaster and tidy up the old fireplace if it is underneath, or a builder would probably be required if you need a decorative fireplace installed. If you intend on using the fire then you would need to make sure it complies with Document J of the building regulations and a hetas registered installer would be the best people to use for this.

First of all. What do you mean by decorative. Different types of fire places require different applications. John Giles. Builder.

Hi, when I’m asked to fit a decorative bedroom fireplace, I simply measure the size of the insert, Mark the wall and then using a 12mm drill bit, I drill a line of holes along the line, until I have the area drilled out. Then using a sharp chisel I cut the bricks/blocks out, within the marked out area, leaving a hole in the wall slightly larger than the insert. I clean out any debris and then fit the bedroom one piece cast iron surround, with screws via the top and bottom lugs. I’m actually a stonemason, but it’s very easy to fit this type of fireplace. Providing its just decorative.
