Should I tank my bathroom or build a wet room?
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.23 PM
I have heard that it's always best to tank a bathroom, even if it's not a wet room. Due to the massive increase in cost, I am considering fitting a wet room instead. Is it worth it?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

It's always best to tank a bathroom, that said, it is rarely ever done.
Most bathrooms have a shower enclosure with an appropriate shower tray or bath.
Providing the floor has been prepared adequately and tiled/floored using the appropriate materials, you should not need to tank the room.
Therefore, reducing the cost.
I hope this helps.

There is no need to tank a bathroom unless local conditions dictate requirement.
However, when fitting a wet room the room will require the room to be fully tanked, floor to ceiling within the wet area and to a height of 600mm past the wet area. It would also require tanking to a height of 100mm minimum round the remainder of the room, with the floor fully tanked and waterproofed in the whole room area.

British standards say you should tank a bathroom and if you have a wetroom for sure as water stagnates! Yes it's more expensive but I wouldn't want to be paying someone to RIP all tiles up and do again trust me! Hope this helps mike
