Incomplete rendering of a semi-detached house due to unprofessional finish
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.23 PM
The builder rendered the top half but has not done it very well. We have stopped him from completing the bottom half. Can this be rescued?? 2 layers of plaster and mesh has already gone on to the wall, how do I find a reputable plasterer to give a smooth finish to the render?

Hello
You could potentially go over it, but you would have to put another 20mm on over two coats. And that depends what state the original plasterer has left it in. If it’s not sound it would have to come off. And it would depend if you have enough clearance to put another 20mm on. Otherwise it will need to be hacked off and started again.
Hope this helps.

Its very hard to know without a visit to be fair. It might be salvageable but without pics etc it’s very hard to give advice. Depends on mesh being well applied.. I think the main thing is if you weren’t happy with the way it was going you halted it. That’s a good thing. The danger now is that a new person will come in and either rubbish what’s done or charge to correct what doesn’t need fully correcting, so you have to be very choosy in who you pick.

I would personally recommend removing it and starting again as if his only rendered the top and you put 20mm on top of it which is not really a good idea as the new render stands a chance of going hollow on the old as it just won't stick. Sorry but that's what i would do .then at least you know it's been done properly. It is not advisable to rener on the top of any existing render and ive been in the trade 34 years now

the best solution would be to remove and re do properly, but if what has been done already is sound the bottom half can be completed at the same and used as a base coat for a coloured thin coat topping.
