Can you have a freestanding bath if your drainage/pipework can't go underneath the floor?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.23 PM

Hi, I live in a third floor flat with concrete floors and I'd like a freestanding bath but I'm not sure how it would drain if the pipework can't go down underneath the floor? Can you have the pipework running along the side of the walls to the main waste stack and either have it as a feature or perhaps box it in? As my kitchen is behind the wall which would have the freestanding bath, I'm also wondering if the pipework could go through the wall into the kitchen and be concealed by kitchen cupboards, and then drain where the kitchen sink water goes? Also if I could have wall mounted bath taps and have the water supply for the bath coming from the kitchen (again with the pipework for this hidden by kitchen cupboards)?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

In a nutshell, you can have whatever you want. Any builder who says otherwise they just can’t be bothered as it may be a bit awkward. The question is the costs you’re willing to pay and the best solution around it which leaves the finish that you’re happy with. All the ideas you came up with, without obviously seeing the job in person I can only go from what you’ve said without making sure there is no obvious obstructions sound doable! The ways around such an issue are endless. You could stud out walls to accommodate pipework or even have false floors raising your bath off the existing floor and hide the waste that way, and make a feature of your freestanding bath. Anything is possible some things just cost more then others and some things are just more challenging! Good luck with your bathroom project.

If a builder has said you can’t do it, I would say, either there is a valid reason why it can’t be done, which without seeing it I would not know, or he is being lazy, or he doesn’t want the job. You can have whatever you want if it’s possible to do. Like in a previous answer, it’s down to the amount you wish to spend and the amount of disruption you’re willing to tolerate. Cutting into concrete is noisy and dusty, but wholly doable. Alternatively, and something I’ve often done, your bath can be raised onto a plinth, it’s commonly done to achieve a ‘fall’ for shower wastes. And pipes can be hidden behind false walls, or inside studs.

Regards the bath waste yes you can have a free standing bath even if the waste pipes can’t be hidden underneath the floor, some people opt for a platform for the bath to stand on others will make a feature out of it using chrome pipe whilst the simplest and cheapest option would be to box pipe work in not very pretty but easy to keep clean And yes you could also have wall mounted taps but a site visit would be best to find best solution for this Hope this helps

Hi there this would depend on your freestanding bath style. As some the pipe work must be in your floor chamber. It your bath has legs the you would use chrome pipe work this is more expensive but looks so much better. Please feel free to contact use for any advice.
