Back box and sockets behind kick board in kitchen?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.44 PM

Hi there, I am a novice to moving home and the electrician that is doing my electrical work has ran cable under my kitchen units (new kitchen) into back boxes and sockets that are for my kitchen appliances just sitting on the floor. I questioned this as thought of leaks etc as they are both close to washing machine/fridge freezer etc. Is this dangerous? I have tried to research it and can't find much on it anywhere. He says it's common as easily accessible and not integrated into the kitchen cupboards?? Please help.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

In my opinion they should be, as you say in the adjacent cupboard. Bit of a lazy way to do it, bad design methods. As if you had a problem with one of the appliances you would have to haul the plinth off to isolate it. Also, as you say-leaks.

It is my interpretation of the regs that the sockets should be securely fixed, either inside the cabinets or if accessible the wall behind them. It sounds like he has in effect made extension leads from the installation cable and backboxes. I agree with deacon that it is kind of lazy and bad practice.

The sockets need to remain readily accessible for maintenance and installed as per manufactures recommendations. Placing the sockets on the floor unsecured does not satisfy these requirements, i advise the sockets are installed inside the units (not under sink)

i would install the sockets at least 450mm from floor level securely onto the back of wall or inside cupboard and also not too near a water pipe. Sounds like you have an electrician that needs to read the regs again.
