Pottertone Suprima 40L randomly fails to start and shows red light
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.24 PM
I have a Suprima 40L boiler which is about 11-13 years old. Recently it is not acting properly. Sometimes the boiler will fail to start and a constant red light is illuminated. According to the manual, it means faulty PCB. However, the boiler is able to start again when I do a short press on reset button.
Although I am not sure something else could be wrong, but few things I have noticed
1. Black needle on the gauge near the expansion vessel is pointing below 0.5 bar. I tried to increase it but when I turn the filling loop valve, the water leaks on the cold water side. Closing the valve seems to stop the leak. Is that normal?I am afraid to turn the valve on again.
2. sometimes, there is water dripping through tundish. The cylinder is MegaFlo.
Any advice is highly appreciated.

A simple trick on suprimas are all if you res set after it goes to lock out red. If it will not reset at all n remains solid red (no flashing at all the means pcb 100% is gone, if it comes back on flashing after reset then simple more fault finding is required. It could still be sound can be pcb, but could also be yellow temperate overstat, if boiler thinks you fit too hot it will go to lockout. Never hard to diagnose the fault on that boiler. Basics really. The pressure should be 1.5 cold and kept a eye on when heating is on but again basics. Don’t worry about drip on filling loop it will hold when you re shut, many panic but it’s fine. Also if your boiler had been sufficiently working for years n had very few problems do not let people force you into a new boiler, it’s less officiant obviously but Personally the suprimas are whey reliable and parts are not obsolete
Hope that helps in anyway

It's common for external filling loops to leak as you open them, nothing to be concerned about. This intermittent fault on a Potterton suprima is common and it is almost certainly the Pcb that's causing the problem. The guage should be at about 1.5 bar.. But it's probably not related to the problem.
The vessel is burst and will need replaced and a new prv as well

Basically judging by the age of the boiler and the way you keep messing with it to get it going, could mean the following:
1. You are not listening the engineers that have visited and explained to you the problem
2. Your boiler is basically old and needs to be changed for a more efficient boiler that would save you money long term (Always go for the best guarantee, nearly all boilers run the same so price is not a issue)
3. By playing around with your boiler you are risking a possible ID as you are not a qualified gas engineer

Check wiring loom connected to PCB, quite a common problem with suprimas,
Cheaper than the board.
