Tiled bath panel with access

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.24 PM

What’s the best way to tile a bath panel with a removable piece for access? I’ve read about leaving a hole in the backing board and attaching the access panel with magnets which sounds fine. But does that mean it won’t be watertight? Since, I assume, you don’t grout around the outer edge of the access panel bit? I could silicone but that would be slow to remove if in an emergency, wouldn’t it? Thanks for any advice! Thanks to everyone for your replies, really helpful!!

Tile the room first, this will allow you to plan the bath panel tiling accurately by lining the bath panel tiles up with the wall. You can then decide the size and placement of the access panel as it is aesthetically better to make it to the size of say 4 full tiles rather than having to cut tiles and therefore having an unsightly line through them. The panel can be attached by using screws with colour matched plastic dome heads to cover the heads or if preferred, using magnetic catches or Velcro to hold in place. The gap around the panel can be filled with colour matches silicone, which can be removed in seconds with a sharp Stanley knife in case of emergency and is also waterproof.

Magnets would be ok or even countersunk screws , it's not like you need access underneath your bath very often , so I would recommend sealing edges as it's a bathroom, and if you do need to get under bath , you will just have to re seal

I would silicone as it would be easier to cut out then grout. You wouldn’t leave it unfinished. I would make sure the water can be turned off elsewhere.

Hi, you're not gonna need access very often, so tile the panel before being put into place, once tiled drill holes at each end to allow you to screw the panel onto the frame.

Best to have solid frame and cup and screw tile so if need access then quickly cut silicone and unscrew
