Repairing and painting the bits around a window
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.24 PM
We have a Victorian terrace house and the fancy bits around the large bay window is crumbling (due to water damage I think-a previous handyman didn’t use the right outdoor paint and he didn’t repoint properly) do we need a specialist stone mason or can a painter & decorator do this job? Many thanks

We would always advise to use a specialist stone mason to fix any external stone work before calling a painter in.

Depending on the extent of the damage, a good decorator can repair the masonry using a good quality exterior filler such as a toupret masonry filler
It might have been due to the fact the handyman didn’t prep and seal the area properly first as well as not using a good quality exterior paint

If the repair is timber you need a two pack wood repair product. If it is masonary a strong mix of fine sand and cement is required make sure you apply unibond first any decorations should be carried out with deluxe exterior weathershield

If it's bath stone I would recommend a qualified stone Mason to do repairs.then can be treated and painted by a painter.

If the stonework has been previously painted you should be able to repair it then repaint
If water ingress has damaged the stone to a degree where you can't repair then a stonemason or builder would indeed need to have a look at it. Hope this helps.

I would prepare the area sanding as much has possible and use a 2 Pack filler , leave to harden, rub down, prime and undercoat, then apply the finishing coat .

Sounds like the threat work is damaged and needs to be re-made I would suggest that a concrete repair person to take a look at it as it’s not something that a decorator would do.
