Central Heating

Rads furthest from boiler struggling to heat and constant air in system

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.24 PM

Been having an issue recently with my central heating. I live in a bungalow with 8 rads. Worcester Bosch greenstar 30i in the loft. The two living room rads are furthest away from the boiler and they barely get warm any more. Both rads are less then 6 months old. If I turn all other rads off, the two living room rads with fire up normally with a gurgle of air (which I bleed out). I can then turn all other rads back on and the heating will work as normal for 2-3 days. After a few days the same problem returns, no heat from living room rads and when I do get them going there is always air in the system. I’ve had an engineer visit to flush the system and balance but still no joy. One thing the engineer noticed was 15mm pipe from the boiler feeding into the first radiator in the system (towel rail in newly refurbed bathroom) and he kind of pushed the emphasis on the bathroom fitters for fitting 15mm pipe rather than 22mm. I’m not sure if that could cause the issue and I’m not sure if the bathroom fitters even messed/changed that pipe work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There are a few reason's for this. 1) The boiler isn't capable with the demand 2) Auto air-vents on the system would help with the air issues

find a properly qualified heating engineer to sort this,it could be to many problems to list, but if you are having to bleed this system all the time ,you must be filling system as well, letting in untreated water witch will lead to more corrosion.

This is a common problem following with systems that have been added to or altered and the installer has not replaced the corrosion inhibitor fluid in the system. Bungalows are particularly susceptible due to long flat runs of overhead pipe work, especially if no automatic air vents have been fitted to relieve trapped air. As another contributor stated your system may now need flushing to remove any corrosion or sludge build-up and return the system to its best efficiency. The size of the boiler and is ability to cope with the size of the system is unlikely to be a contributing factor because as you have said when the air lock is cleared the system works well. Be aware that if your boiler is still under manufacturers warranty it is likely to be invalidated by the lack of corrosion inhibitor in the system so you should get this attened toy as soon as possible.
