Repairing and painting the bits around a window
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.24 PM
We have a Victorian terrace house and the fancy bits around the large bay window is crumbling (due to water damage I think-a previous handyman didn’t use the right outdoor paint and so water soaked through causing damage). A builder we hired rectified the problem but that was about five yrs ago and now it has started to crumble again. What do I need to do? Get a specialists in to fix it? Or can a normal painter do it? Many thanks in advance

The "fancy bits" are bath stone?
If they are i would say to source someone who specialises in bath stone restoration

I would recommend, scraping away any loose and crumbling masonry, then apply Turplur filler which is a moulding filling. This filler can also be sanded down for a smooth finish. Apply 2 coats of Sandtex smooth masonry paint to finish.

Is really depends on what the "fancy bits are" and the material there made of and obviously the extend of the damage.
If its minor water damage a good painter could repair use a good waterproof exterior filler.
If more substantial damage call out a stone Mason or specialist.
