Bricklaying & Repointing

Pointing / rendering

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.49 PM

Hello, I recently removed some decking exposing about 2 1/2 bricks (height) below the rendering to ground level. It needed pointing so I did it but with the wrong mortar, apparently I needed to use lime mortar as we have a old house with soft brick. My question is : do I need to chip out the mortar and replace or will it be ok, or can I render the bricks to keep the moisture out? Edit : - Thanks for your answers but I’m asking which one I should do... 1:- replace modern mortar with lime mortar 2:- leave modern mortar in 3: - render over modern mortar? Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Rendering will help to prevent moisture coming through. But maybe chipping it out and repointing is the best bet for the long term solution. Either way both will help.

If your repointing the joins must be cut out at lest 12mm deep dust free the morter should be 1part cement 1part lime 6part building sand when mixed not to wet point brickwork let morter to firm up then strike joints brush off spoils with soft brush let joints to cure for 28 days then apply a water selent ok

Re pointing with N.H.L. mortar will only be of benefit .if you render with N.H.L.render allowing your building to breathe. If you render with a modern render this will seal the building trapping any water ingress in the brickwork creating dampness. Old building and modern material do not work. Good luck Alex
