Should the grout in my walk in shower by changing colour/appearing 'wet'?

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.49 PM

I've just had a plumber do my bathroom into a walk in shower unit. The job overall is quite poor and we still have the leak this was supposed to solve! One question I have is that he had used 'water repellent' grout. Some of the grout appears to get wet when we have a shower (but some doesn't change colour) - it goes from grey to virtually a black colour. Is this ok? Should the grout not be waterproof? How do I get it to stop changing colour? Any help would be appreciated.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

All grout are waterproof and some especially grey will turn darker when wet however the fact that the leak has not been rectified gives me some concern.

If the grout is an epoxy grout it won’t need sealing as it’s not porous, otherwise a sealer to protect the grout would be advised. If you google ‘grout & tile protector’ you’ll see there is a massive range to choose from and some are really easy to apply - aerosols etc. I’d explore the leak further too 👍🏼, good luck

I think I would be more bothered about the leak than the grout changing colour either get the plumber back or somebody new to solve the leak. ( you don’t want to take everything back out.) Then while they are there at the job they may advise you better. I hope everything works out.

Hi not all grouts are waterproof , however they may offer some resistance albeit for a short while . I would very much hope you were not hoping that the grout would solve your leak and I would be very tempted to look at a total refit of the shower and walk in cubicle. I would recommend this as there are several points Where water ingress can occur. I hope this goes some way to giving you an explanation. Best Derek The property repair office
