Existing horizontal gas bayonet fitting on gas cooker
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.49 PM
IS this classed as 'unsafe and not to regulation ' as what i have been told by gas contractor or is this not to current standards and i dont need to have it changed until i have a new cooker installed?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Yes this is correct. A bayonet fitting should be 750mm from the floor and facing downwards. Allowing a smooth loop with no strain on the gas hose from the cooker.
Although this is not classed as “immediately dangerous” if a new cooker is installed it will need to be rectified. Regards, Max at Furlong Heating.

Manufacturers instructions override the gas regulations when it comes to the height above the floor for the bayonet. This is because the manufacturers know where the hot zones are on their rear service panels. This will be defined in the installation instructions that comes with the appliance. If the instructions do not define the area where the bayonet should be then the gas regulation height should be used.
As for the angle of the bayonet, this is down to the flexible cooker hose used. If the hose has a right angle connector at the end then the bayonet should point sideways. If the flexible hose bayonet connection is straight then the bayonet must point downwards.
As previously stated this is to ensure the flexible hose can hang in a perfect U without any stress to the joints in it, eg where the rubber meets the brass.
As for what to do. It is the responsibility of the guy who installed the cooker to ensure it is correctly fitted. If this is a new installation get the fitter back. If this is an old installation then legally you do not have to carry out the advice given by the visiting engineer who is correct in what he stated and is not responsible for rectifying it but is responsible for bringing it to your attention
Who ever fits the next cooker should rectify the error

Yes that correct
That needs to be rectified if you are amending any gas pipes or installing a new cooker.

3 of the 4 answers above are incorrect. A bayonet does not HAVE to face downwards. It is a recommendation only. A recommendation cannot be enforced so whoever told you that, like the 3 companies above, are wrong.

Hi providing the gas supply is sound and suitable and like the previous guy has explained regarding the 750mm from the floor current regs you can buy an angled cooker hose so you still get the loop the previous guy explained so you wouldn't have to alter the gas supply when fitting a new cooker
