Can you secure policarbonate conservatory roof ends with poly button fixing screws

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.49 PM

Have an old consevatory probably 20/30 yr old with thin policarbonate roof and wooden frame. Some screws along joinsts at the end have been lifted due to poly panels expanding. Found from Wicks some button screws for securing polycarb. Is it ok to drill through the polycarb from top into wood joinsts to force it back down? I am worried its prone to leak. Or should I try lifting the plastic bar that hold the polycarb in place. And screw down the bars. I am worried because its old, might break the bar or damage the sheet. My plan is to secure the sheet for now and replace the whole consevatory in a few years with upvc frame and new roof. Appreciate some advice please.

Yes, it would be fine to fix thru the polycarbonate into the timber which should secure the sheet until you upgrade in a few years. The polycarbonate should be multi chambered even if it is old 16mm thick or less so any water which may get in should run to the bottom and escape thru the breather tape at the end of the sheet and into the gutter. If you use screws with cups and covers you'll also be able to hide the screw head and put a small amount of clear silicone on to seal it.

Poly buttons were commonly used on older buildings to stop the roof sheets moving. I can understand your concern about damaging the sheets and this would be a problem if you used something like a spade bit. I would use a sharp hss bit and then seal the buttons with silicone as you fit them.

Button screws are fine used with a good quality silicone.
