Split spindles on front door
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.49 PM
My front door has a split spindle in I believe so I was just wondering if there was a way of making it so the door opens from the outside without needing to use the key or not
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Split spindles are designed so you cannot open the front door by just turning the handle ,the key has to engage in the lock and turn to enable for handle to open the door .
A fixed spindle might be able to be fitted depending on the lock but this is not normally advised as anyone can just open the door from the outside

Yes.
If you replace the handle spindle into a straight through spindle, the door will open without a key.
If the handles are at different heights, then you can change the handle achieving the same result.

You can change the spindle to a solid one if the outside and inside handles are the same level? If not then you need to change the handles as well. 👍🏻

You need to know if it is split spindle or twin spindle. Split spindle just needs a solid spindle through the lock into your existing handles. Twin spindle will require new handles fitting the top spindle hole usually 92mm centre

Hi
The Spindle if at the desired height can be changed for your purpose but never compromise on security unless no valuables are kept inside etc...
Good Luck

Hi there,
You just need a straight spindle instead of a split spindle.
Thanks
