How to cure foul smells coming from wash-basin plugholes?
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.48 PM
Every so often foul odours emanate from the plugholes in my twin wash basins, especially following a rain shower, sometimes accompanied by gurgling as the water drains from the basins, but mostly not. The bathroom is on the 1st floor of a converted warehouse. Plugging the basins and leaving them part-filled with water counteracts but does not solve the problem. I suspect that the system is poorly designed, but it's odd that the bad smells are infrequent. Any ideas on (how to test for) possible causes, please?

Poor waste design and/ or a minor blockage or scale build up. I would advise a qualified plumber redesigns and replaces the waste from all bathroom furniture leasing to the SVP, ensuring sufficient traps are installed on all outlets, as well as sufficient drops on all waste pipes.
It would also be worth the plumber checking the SVP vents correctly

You could try installing hep vo traps which have a self sealing mechanism inside also whilst installing these i would advise machining and flushing pipework
