Windows & Door fitting

Window is jammed shut.

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.02 PM

Hi, One of my upvc windows has just jammed shut. The button still moves, and the handle still moves, although not through its full normal range of movement, but whatever position the handle is in, the window refuses to budge, and it feels as if it is locked from the bottom. I have recently sprayed it with silicone spray (as advised by a window fitter) so I'm wondering if that has caused it to attract some debris and become gunked up. Any advice as to the best way to fix it? The windows are over 10 years old but are in excellent condition otherwise.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

First of all, on any movable part, only use white lithium grease. It does not attract debris or dry out your mechanism unlike WD40. The problem sounds like the side mechanism may have snapped. This means the top locking pin will move up and down, but the bottom locking pin would be jammed in the closed position. If this is the case, it would be a new locking mechanisms. The other problem may be the square spindle has split its housing, this would mean you have movement in the handle but basically it’s spinning within the mechanism, if you in screw the handle and remove the square peg (spindle) have a look of the inner housing is still square. Hope this helps.

It sounds as if the the locking mechanism cam could be snapped. If the handle moves but is not engaging/disengaging the lock then this is normally the answer.
