Extending Electrical heater cable
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.02 PM
Hiya, Is there any safe way to extend the cable of an electric heater (1kw and 2kw). The heater cable is only 1.5 m long and wont reach a socket from my desired location. Any safe suggestions would be highly appreciated.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hey,
Use 1.5mm heat resistant cable flex and you can joint by any junction box or Gel Connector or you can change whole cable for longer one ;)
1.5mm Heat cable can take easy 3kw and can be up to 5M long easy
Thanks

The manufacturer makes the cable that long for a reason.
Any longer at that size cross sectional area and the cable would overheat and be a fire hazard.
The cable would need to be replaced and upgraded with 2.5mm csa flex (if indeed it would fit), assuming that the existing is smaller than this.
Or you could employ an electrician to install an extra socket in a suitable location.
Many thanks.

It can be extended and there are a number of ways of doing this but joints are best avoided. It would be better, and neater to replace the whole flex all the way back to the appliance. An electrician should be able to do this. There is absolutlely no need to install 2.5mm and in fact the British Standard (BS1363) for a standard 13amp plug limits the conductor size to a maximum of 1.5mm.
