Regrouting marble flooring with a very small gap between tiles

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.02 PM

We have recently encountered a situation in which a client needs regrouting. The gap between tiles is very small (the previous tiler did not use spacers). It varies, but is mostly 1mm, max 2mm in some areas. Now, we have tried to clean the exisiting grout using the Vitrex electric grout remover, but it does affect the edges of the tiles, having a gap so small. I'm thinking of using a polishing solution to clean the grout. What is your advice? I've seen a lot of tools, with diamond pads and water jet but I'm not sure what to choose. Waiting for your ideas and expertise. Thank you. P.S. Tiles are 900 by 900.

Try a steam cleaner or take grout out and regrout .They should have used a rubber based grout when laying marble its a higher quality and cleans easily

You will 99% cause damage to the tiles. You would be best getting a very good grout cleaner and grout brush and give them a scrub

Score the grout line deeper if possible. 3mm deep or more is ideal. Then re grout using a fine grout (mapei). Grout flush to existing tile level.

The only way to do that then is to use a thin diamond blade and try using a grinder but obviously take your time and be very very careful not to cut in to the tiles

Be carefull with electric tools you could chip the tiles use a hand scratch tool or a Stanley blade to work the grout out or to scratch it. Then clean and regrout over

Stanley knives but always risk to chip tiles with removing grout. I always Advice clients it’s time consuming so expensive and I will not be held liable for small chips. Most agree and are fine with this. If they don’t I walk away as the risk of a client demanding the whole floor needs to be replaced outweighs the invoice to regrout.

Hi, To remove grout, try wetting the joints with warm water. And use wire wool which should soften the grout and a blade to remove the grout, which will not chip the tiles. Or if you wanted to open the joints to make them bigger, a marble cutting blade (wet cutting ) so regrouting would be easier. But if not. Regrouting joints of 1-2mm. You would have to flood grout the joints.

Hi.i do in the past Something like that...fold the sandpaper in half and insert into the gap between the marble sheets and then try to polish(sanding) the edges.you need precision because you can go in zig zag.slowly and gently.

The vitrex is noo good it will chip the marble. If the gaps are very small i mean less then 2mm the only way is with a stanley knige if the grout allow it(flexible or non). Im using a diamond blade from bosh with a rotary multy tool. But if the the grout is less than two mm in any ways when you start raking them with stanley or any power tool-the edges will be damaged.

I'd try using a hook knife blade, start slowly and work you way through. Will take a while but saves an expensive fix.

The only successful way I know of is to cut old grout out with a stanly knife. Then regrout with a fine grout

Hi There is no solution just to cleaning grout, you will have against incorrect gap between tiles, which visually spoils all the work. The best thing is, if your hands are well trained in tiling, to cut new correct lines between tiles (cutting tiles edges), suitable size 2-2.5 mm gap, which special slim blades, using well balanced cutter without any vibration to exclude edges damage and then polish manually edges of tiles, to make similar gap between the tiles. After this you can regrout again. This is very hard job, but you can improve quality of whole tiling job.
