Can you fit a carpet that has been folded for six months?
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.02 PM
I bought a carpet in November and my partner said he was going to fit it as he does artificial grass. The carpet was folded at the time, even though I asked for it to be rolled. The carpet has still not been fitted and I was wondering whether I can still use it or whether I need to buy another one? Thanks
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I’m sure it would be impossible to get the creases out after being folded for that amount of time. So unfortunately I’d recommend buying a new piece

It might depend on the what the carpet is made of ie wool or man made fibres & how badly creased it is

I would suggest unfolding the carpet to fully inspect it. If the creases aren’t too bad, it may be alright to stretch them out. Allowing the carpet time to flatten in a warm area may help prior to fitting. If the creases have damaged the backing of the carpet then you may need to consider a replacement.

Yes you can, you havent mentioned if it has been creased etc but as long as it is fitted by a tradesman it should be ok

It is dependent on the type of backing on the carpet . Secondary backed carpet ( backing glued on ) could possibly suffer delamination , felt backed shouldn't be a problem as long as the carpet hasn't had weight on top . But lease be aware pile separation will have occurred duet the length of time folded , this should retain its self with vacuuming . Best thing to do is spread carpet out and inspect for defects mentioned before fitting .

Leave it out in the sun and let the creases drop out before fitting

The company I work for are domestic work only. Basically there isn't a carpet that I haven't worked with. The most important thing a carpet needs at the beginning is heat for example. When you get a new carpet fitted and it looks great but a few days later a few bumps appear. Most people think it's a bad fitting job. It's not always the case it's the heat softening the latex on the carpet. Each carpet you buy has been rolled up stored in a freezing cold warehouse then in my case kept in my van overnight
