Sewage smell - likely doe to neighbours upstairs
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.02 PM
Ground floor flat, over the past few weeks I noticed sewage smell appearing in bathroom (without me using it) - after checking with neighbours it seem to be after they are using bath or shower. What can be causing it? Should I call a plumber or them? Thank you

If you don’t use a room the trap water can evaporate.
Also if pipework are not vented correctly you can pull the trap water seal leaving a direct line of smell escaping into a room. You could also have stagnant water in the trap.
AAV’s on traps may help but main stack and drain venting is a possible problem

Could be a number of things, firstly check the plastic outlet on your loo. Then check the waste pipes from the bottom of your basin and bath. The only reason for a sewage smell within a room is a non airtight/watertight pipe in that room leading to the outside Downpipe.
From why you say it is unlikely that the problem is the fault of your upstairs neighbours.
