Gap in Stair metal railings

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.02 PM

I have metal railings that goes down my stairs in my back garden. Roughly 186cm length , 93cm height. I have a new dog that keeps putting her head through the railings, it is quite a steep drop so i have temporarily put chicken wire all over it. This is only a temporary measure and i just wondered if there was a way that i could get the gap between my railings smaller or do i just need to get them all replaced? Thank you

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, What id suggest if you feel it doesnt over do it look wise, is to contact a steel fabricator or railings company and have new ones welded in between. I hope this helps

The gap between each vertical infill bar generally should not exceed 100mm, preventing such risks. Additional vertical infill bars should be welded in, or a slightly more expensive option would be new stair railings. Thank you

Having steel welded could work out quite expensive. An alternative would be to use a steel mesh that is a thicker gauge than chicken wire. This can be secured using cable ties.

Purchase online wire mesh sheet 1.2 metres X 1.8 metres long, 2mm dia Choose a mesh with 2inch square holes Attach the sheet to the existing stair with simple brackets The mesh is galvanised and weather resistance Best of luck Mike G
