Any issue with electrical cables any leak in bathroom

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.22 PM

There was a leak under the bathroom which caused damage to under the bathroom through into the lounge, where there was a light fitting. The light where the damage was now works fine (was original blowing bulbs immediately) however would the leak could any long term damage to the electrical wires or once the area is completely dry, will the electrical cable be OK or should i get it checked out? Thanks for your replies, I understand the light fitting itself may be damaged or rusted which I understand however I meant specifically would or could any cabling get damaged by being damp or near a leak if no circuit break or electrical issues have shown themselves?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

We recommend that u get a qualified electrician to check the wiring and connections in case the water has corroded any of the connections inside the light ,even though it is working ok now the light fitting could cause problems in the future or have damage now that isn’t causing an issue yet

Water is very destructive to most building materials, in your case it sounds as though perhaps excess moisture affecting the light has now dried, however it would be wise to have the light fixing inspected as the presence of moisture might have instigated rust to components, for example, or other issues which might affect its function in future again. Another reason your cables will need a professional to test them is the possibility of reduced insulation protection as the presence of moisture may have exacerbated slight cable damage which will only get worse

I would also recommend someone qualified to take a look at the light fitting to see if they can see any corrosion or any arcing due to the water in the light. The cable itself to the light should be completely fine to water but aslong as it’s not prolonged to water as this was just a leak the cable should be fine. Other house holds with the same cable that should be to this light are on the outside of buildings under all weathers which lasts… but isn’t acceptable In conclusion, contact a qualified electrican to see if they can find any damage to the light, as this was a leak the cable itself would be fine to abit of water Many thanks Mason MSK Electrical

Water and electrics don't mix well, 90% of time once water has dried up the MCB will reset, but for safety of house and person's, get the cable checked out by a professional electrician asap, arcing might of happened, so now there is a underlining safety issue.

We would always recommend that any cables connections are checked after water damage as there maybe some issues in time. You may find the light fitting may go rusty or have corroded connections. Please make sure you get a registered electrician to check your light fitting. Many thanks Dan A.M Electrics

Water will leave wires in terminals with a coated furring which effects the operation of the light. Those ends will need cleaning by a qualified Electrician.
