Safetey of socket fitting near outdoor tap

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.43 PM

Is there any rule around how close a socket can be to a garden tap? Our builders have fitted the socket around 3 feet directly underneath the tap outside our extension. Surely can't be right? Would be great to see if there are specific rules around this?

There are no 'rules' on how far away an external socket needs to be from a garden tap. Provided the external socket is a minimum rating of IP56 and is protected by an RCD then it is within regulations. However, common sense on the installers part needs to be applied, personally I would not be satisfied with installing an external socket directly underneath a garden tap, as it would be in the path of the water flow when the tap is open, and someone could be mowing the lawn with an electric mower, whilst someone else is using a leaky hose to water the plants. If I was carrying out an EICR, I would make a note of it, but I would not code it, as it is not in breach of any Regulations.

Common sense should prevail here and the builders who installed this sound like they didn’t have any. I certainly wouldn’t fit it where they have for very obvious reasons. All very well people quoting the Electrical Regulations etc etc but we as electricians have to design a job also and this falls into the category of external influences. One thing I would ask.... why are builders installing outside sockets?

If ip ratings for the external is correct and circuits are protected by an RCD/RCBO as regulations direct by law, it is what it is, However I feel if anyone in there right mind considers fitting any electrical external fittings below a potential constant source of water ( other than a pond pump) They should not be involved in the installation

No it's no right, I know a socket can't be 300mm to sink in the kitchen not 100% on outside tap but still it shouldn't be under it. Also the outside socket should be in an IP rated housing.

Not breaking any regulations but common sense would stop me and most other electricians from installing it there.
