Who pays for blades when on day rate?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.43 PM

When working on day rates, should the day rate cover things like expanding foam gun cleaner, multi-tool blades etc. Obviously these get priced into jobs, but when a job is being carried out over a long term, should the trades absorb these sort of costs or should the client pay these on top of their day rate. It’s a difficult conversation to have especially as some jobs are more tricky than others, and how do you prove how many blades were used over a long period of time, but if that’s the only job you’ve worked on does the constant need for blades fall on the customer

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Omar_59, This really depends on the terms and conditions that have been agreed at the start of the project. As you said, if the job is quoted/priced, this would normally include all costs - labour, materials, consumables, etc. However on the other side, if the pricing includes labour only, then it's down to the client to cover all consumables - drill bits, multi-tool blades, etc. Kind Regards, Ivan

No hard and fast rules. Needs to be agreed by both parties. Why are you agreeing to day rates on a job that should have a price?

Day rate normally suggests labour only, however, before you start, ensure you agree on what is included or not...eg. stipulate, i will cost xx per day, but you will be responsible for other costs or add into day rate and explain this also.

If your working on a day rate which is technically labour only, the costs of any consumables or materials that are needed to complete the job to a certain standard should be supplied by the client. This would need to be discussed and agreed by both parties before work has started.

Working on day rate means labour only and client pays, but before you start make sure you clarify what you need before you start. If your on price than you cover every thing.
