Plumbing

Outdoor water leak possibly from neighbours property, what can I do?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.43 PM

First off - I'm not 100% sure whether this is technically a plumbing question, but it seemed like the best option to select. My back yard has a pool of water next to my neighbours brick shed, the source of this appears to be running from where his shed joins my outer (kitchen) wall, and is constantly flowing into my drain. He is quite an elderly man, and will not answer his door, or respond to my note describing the leak and asking if I could come to check before calling someone out to fix it. I have turned off my mains water at the internal stopcock for a couple of hours, but there is no change to the flow in water into the drain. Should I call someone out to have a look at this anyway, knowing that they won't have access to his house, just as confirmation that it isn't coming from my house? How would the tradesperson be able to rule out my house from being at fault? Obviously I don't want to spend £££s, just to be told that it is my neighbour at fault, and still have no way to then stop the leak!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi , The only way to find out where the leak is coming from is to dig around until you find the source of the problem ,then when you find the pipe you should be able to confirm who owns it. Regards Stefan Price

If you turn your water supply off and turn on the lowest tap in your property (your kitchen sink, outside tap or drain valve at stop tap, if there is one present) to drain the water out of your property, then check if the water is still leaking outside. It may take a while for all the water to drain out of your property. If you find the water is still leaking the chances are it’s your neighbors property and not yours. Hope this helps

Sounds like next door could have blocked waste gully and water is overflow in to your property,be persistent in trying to get access to property so issue can be resolved

First before digging around try turning of the water to your house for a couple of hour and see if the flow slows or stops the main outside stop tap which will be were your water meter is if you have on
