Hi Karen, The certificate you are referring to is called an 'electrical installation condition report' If you think about it like the MOT you get for your car but instead of the car its your house. The inspector carrying out the report will spend the day inspecting the condition of the electrical installation (typically in a standard 3 - 4 bedroom house a day should be sufficient). He will then issue you with a certificate that will ether be satisfactory or unsatisfactory. If it is satisfactory then that's it for the next 10 years (or however many years the inspector believes it should be inspected). If it is unsatisfactory the certificate will have observations and recommendations on what will need to be done in order to bring the installation up to current bs7671 standards. You we only get a 10 year safety certificate on a new install if an old install you can get a 5 years of satisfactory

To make it simple The Electrical Installation Condition Report aka EICR Should be carried out every 10 years for Houses and the like and every 5 years for comercial buildings. However when a change of ownership/tenancy the property an EICR has to be performed.

A new build or new installation would be issued with a 10 year retest date all other installations will be tested and could be issued up to 5 years depending on the condition report findings an the test results recorded
