How can I add a backbox and a blanking plate onto expanding foam?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.23 PM

Hi, Keeping it short here, I had a bottomless hole which I filled in with expanding foam with no issues. However, under that foam is some wires I wish to add a backbox and cover that with a blanking plate (So, it will act as a wire junction box) but how can I insert a backbox into foam? I have had two ideas 1, cut a hole and glue the backbox into it or 2, remove the foam and start again but this time was holding the backbox in place as I foam around it. Thanks!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi. Make sure if your that any spray foam around your wires on your "new" junction box as you say, is fire-rated. I would have a competent person in to solve the issue for you. Safety first

Remove the foam and start again and perhaps have an electrician in to do it. Spray foam should not be used around electrical cables as its derating. Cables heat up during use and they can't dissipate the heat in spray foam which is highly efficient at insulating!

Best to remove the foam, use a timber noggin to mount the back box on. Fix the noggin in place with bonding or glue or rebuild hole with concrete & rubble. Run wires/cable through bit of conduit or trunking. Then finish with plaster.

Remove the foam & use wall bond to secure the box in with and when set can drill and plug if necessary..
