Installing Washing Machine

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.23 PM

Hello, I have successfully disconnected my old washer and about to install new. It looks to be a stand pipe behind the washer (this is situated in a cupboard in the bathroom) but has a spigot (?) on top. We sometimes have blockage issues (did with old washer). If I fed the waste pipe down into the stand pipe without the spigot on, would this still work? And potentially help with blockages in future? Thanks, Emily Update: Thanks all for your help. Installed it into the stand pipe. I think part of the problem was also the pipe was going up into the spigot so the angle was odd. Seems to be working brilliantly now. Will also take the advice of doing a hot wash once a month 👍

This should be ok, a good tip is to run a really hot, 90* wash every couple of months, starting now. This will help remove anything still in the pipework

Hi In order for water to flow freely from your appliance the outlet pipe needs to have an air inlet so a sealed spigot could potentially cause pressure blockages. Normally the outlet pipe is pushed into the stand pipe which is usually a larger diameter than the appliance outlet pipe. This ensures air can enter the waste pipe allowing free movement of water. However be sure to check that there is a U bend at the bottom of the stand pipe which ensures no foul smells return from the waste system. Gareth DMB Property Services (Monmouth)

Firstly, take the waste pipe out of the outlet and pop it into the sink. Run the machine on a programme which will allow the water to pump out and see what the flow is like. It should be quite powerful. If it’s not there could be a blockage between the propellor of the waste and the end of the hose - that will need clearing ( often coins or bits of metal which somehow get through the drum ). If the flow is ok stuff the pipe back down the outlet pipe as far as the bend with or without the spigot.

By putting the drain hose 150mm into the vertical of the stand pipe, you are allowing the full bore of the drain pump to be utilised and therefore reducing the potential blocking of the waste pipe, ( do not forget to put a tywrap around the drain pipe to stop it jumping out of the stand pipe) also you are allowing the waste to vent air as there will be a gap between the inner wall of the stand pipe and the outer wall of the drain hose👍
