Ask a questionKitchen Fitting
New Kitchen hood/extractor fan and gas oven and hob fitting
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.48 PM
I would like my kitchen to be renevated however am still raising the funds for this. My question is, would it be possible to get a new kitchenhood/extractor fan and gas and hob fitted first as this is needed and once I am able to raise extra funds to get the kitchen done (tiling, cupboards, sinks, flooring etc), get the rest of kitchen done around it? And what tradesman would I need for each of the tasks?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Dear Khai,
You can have the hob and oven fitted and a new extractor hood prior to you renewing the whole kitchen, however you should take into account the following:
- if at the moment you have a freestanding cooker and you want to replace it with an oven and a hob, you will need to buy a housing unit and also to replace the worktop left and right of the freestanding cooker with a full run that will go above the housing unit and the hob will sit on the worktop in the hole that will need to be cut for it;
- if you currently have a hob and an oven then you will have to remove those and fit the new ones in (they are standard in sizes so they should fit right in);
- for all the gas works you will have to use a gas safe engineer who will issue a certificate after commissioning the gas appliances;
- for the cooker hood, you need to make sure you have a socket in position and a spur for the cooker hood, if not you will need an electrician to sort that out for you;
- you will also need to take into account the position of the cooker hood and see if a ducting could be fitted and connected to an outside wall, otherwise you should go for a cooker hood that uses filters, rather than ducting.
You will also have to consider potential damaging to the appliances that will come with time, so maybe when you will decide to renew your kitchen your appliances may not look like brand new and won’t compliment the new cupboards. Also the more you fit, remove and then refit appliances the more the risk of denting/scratching them increases.
I hope this helps.

I was just thinking about the cooker hood issue i have just fitted a kitchen with no outside walls and obviouskey no window but with a fan with filters but building control are insisting its needs ducting but the customer wont pay any extra fee advice on this woukd be great as i think buikding control are wrong otherwise why make such a extractor.
Thanks in advance.

Building control will always require a hood to be extracted outside.
How far is the outside wall or have you a roof above it can be vented through
