IS VOC in paint dangerous? Are 'smelly" paint is worse for you?
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.48 PM
Should I avoid paint with high VOC? Is there any difference in how paint will look like between high and low VOC paint?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi there,
Within reason they are, "VOC" I believe is short for "volatile organic compounds," and a number of them in paint are known carcinogens (cancer causing). Most of the compounds evaporate from the paint into the air of a few days of drying, but some can remain for longer periods of time. Best thing is to paint in a well ventilated area and keep the area as ventilated as practical for the foreseeable future, which you should ideally be doing for all the rooms in your house anyway.
Hope this helps

In fact, unless you make a conscious effort to choose paint with your family's health and the environment in mind, you'll find that most of today's paint contains many chemicals -- known as volatile organic compounds -- that can negatively affect your health.
So just what exactly is a volatile organic compound? VOCs, as they're commonly called, are chemicals inside paint that are released into the air as you paint a wall.
Although the majority of VOCs leave the paint as the wall dries, not all of them do. In fact, paint can release VOCs into the air for years following the initial painting, putting your family at risk.
VOCs are dangerous for a couple of reasons. First, many VOCs are known carcinogens. A typical bucket of paint contains chemicals, such as benzene, methylene chloride and others, that have been linked to cancer [source: United States Environmental Protection Agency].
VOCs are also the components of paint that cause you to develop a headache after painting. In addition, the VOC-rich air in your home over the following years can put you or a family member at a higher risk of developing asthma or allergies
So why are there VOCs in paint at all if they're so unhealthy, and are there other options?

Tartan paint is probably the best paint you can use.

If you’re worried about smells then try to use water based paints where possible. If you have to use a oil based paint and the smell is affecting you, open windows and wear a mask. I wouldn’t bother going into details about VOC’s as you can be researching for hours!
