Trimmed internal door, bottom needs painting?
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.47 PM
I need to have two internal doors trimmed due to the carpet stopping them closing. I believe they are solid doors. I plan to hire someone to do this. Does the bottom of the doors need to be painted before they are rehung? Am asking this as a painting question rather than a carpentry question - I hope someone can help me. Thanks

Hi Karen,
I think you will get a mixed response to your query. But if I were to do the job, I would apply some paint to the freshly trimmed area. I'm sure a lot of people would just trim and re-hang, but by adding the paint it ensures the wood has protected/treated coat, especially as its the closest part of the door to the floor where potential liquids may make contact from spills etc. Being internal it isn't as crucial to ensure 100% sealing...more of just a peace of mind thing!
The quality of the trimmed edge may also make the decision for you as it may need touching once planed and sanded to remove any rough edges.
I hope this helps :-)

Most manufacturers state there doors must be treated top and bottom ( sealed with paint or varnish ) to keep what ever guarantee comes with your door . How Ever most people will not treat there internal doors top and bottom as they will never be exposed to moisture plus if you treat the bottom of your internal door the fitter would only be able to fit the door back on after the paint or varnish has dried which would mean another cost to re visit after the doors had been treated and fully dried!

The correct answer is yes. Both the top and bottom end grains of a door should be painted. But in reality you open most doors you wont see the top painted or varnished
