Damp Proofing

Dot and dab plasterboard

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.47 PM

Is it okay to dot and dab plasterboard onto walls after dpc course with no sand and cement mix between or will damp, or water moisture still come through?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

It really depents on the cause of the dampness if its a risinging damp issue the reinstatment of the wall should be a cement based renovating plaster but if its a penetrating damp issue due to uneven ground levels (soil retention ) a hessian membrane sysrem should be installed to prevent a bridging issue with the dot dab finish

Dot and dab after DPC course is absolutely fine. Damp only come if the mortar between block work is not done properly, if bricky is leaving gaps not doing cavity insulation, also dpc needs to be at right level, dont forget to put dpm before screeding the floor that alsk helps stops damp and moisture coming through. Hope that will assist you

Hi Gary, Plasterboard will saturate in the presence of even low levels of moisture. Dot and dab can also cause cold bridging and staining unless the wall is completely dry. There are numerous and, sometimes, complex causes of dampness which are 'never' solved by damp proofing. I note you have had a chemical DPC. What was the cause of the moisture and who diagnosed it? It's not rising damp, there are lots of reasons for moisture at low level. Damp should never be covered up.

The dpc is a complete waste of time. They are only installed because building regs say so and that is due to a late 19th century ruling to deal with incorrectly diagnosed damp at the time. Moisture does not rise. There is no such thing as rising damp.
