Carpet fits poorly at edge of hearth

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.47 PM

I recently had a new fireplace installed. Then new carpet as hearth smaller than previously. Same thickness and quality of carpet & underlay as before. Poor cosmetic result as 6/7mm of yellow cement base onto which hearth was fixed is showing above carpet. Neither fitters think anything could have been done differently. Would shims be a good cosmetic solution ? Is it better to caulk & paint over the cement? Any suggestions appreciated. Thank you

one option would be to use a rapid cement. to do we would need to remove exsiting gripper and underlay then produce a ramped edge, then refit gripper and underlay so that the finished carpet edge then covers the area in question. creating a gradually ramp into the room will blend in and not stand out to the eye. giving a great finish. hope this helps

If you're suggesting that the carpet could be raised to cover the cement, I should imagine this to be difficult unless you're going to raise the height of the whole room with ply or hardboard. It's difficult to suggest any cosmetic cover up without seeing it but you could caulk and paint as you have suggested or install a suitable trim over the carpet and in front of the hearth, the trim could be of a contrasting material or it could be painted to match hearth or carpet.

I would not of put grippers in front of the fire half you can take the underlay straight up to the fire half glue the underlay then glue the carpet on top of underlay cut net to the fire half then you won't have the tuck down behind the grippers

I have myself come accross this situation before and i used a piece of 4mm -0mm diminishing strip which is roughly 30mm wide, fix the gripper on top but slightly tighter to the hearth as this in turn helps the carpet sit tighter to the hearth so you are not starting to tuck the carpet down too far back. The carpet is then ramping up slightly but nothing that you are going to notice. Another possibility is getting 12mm thick gripper which is now available and this would be another solution but you would need to use an underlay to suit.

The above answer is correct but quiet extreme ,when a new carpets fitted its tighter than a settled old one and things like this can happen.its nothing wrong a fitter has done but shims or a screed slope will solve or the simple option if it's a very minor line is to mask up the carpet and paint the cement to take your eye off it
