Accidentally used trade undercoat for gloss paint on newly plastered walls!

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.47 PM

Am I ok to use emulsion over undercoat for gloss which I used by mistake?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi there. Yes, it’s absolutely fine to put emulsion over undercoat. A little tip for you... if you ever have a leak and a damp stain comes through which is hard to cover up, use undercoat or an oil based paint first and then emulsion on top to get rid of the stain 😊

Emulsion will adhere to oil-based undercoat. Whether the undercoat has adhered to the freshly dried and dusty plaster without a mist coat of the correct paint first, then only time will tell i'm afraid

Absolutely fine to do so but as the previous tradesman said!! Fresh plaster firstly need a weak coat of emulsion first as this helps to stop any peeling

Newly plastered walls should be painted with watered down emulsion before anything else as the new plaster sucks the moisture out of paint, often too rapidly to get good adhesion. If you don't do this you risk the paint peeling off.

Yes after a light sand off emulsion should be fine over undercoat.

Well as the others have said it should have been a thin coat of emulsion for the first coat but hopefully it will be ok.
