Kitchen Fitting

Inspecting and replacing IKEA tall kitchen cabinet doors

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.01 PM

We had an IKEA kitchen designed, ordered and fitted by IKEA about 7 years ago. The facia on some of the doors is peeling away. IKEA were chosen because their cabinets are deeper than most others that are readily available, and because of their 25 Year Guarantee. You will not be surprised to learn that IKEA and their pet loss adjusters Ecomaster are seeking to avoid the guarantee by blaming the use of the kitchen cabinets and doors in a kitchen. The cabinet carcases are fine, its just the doors that are the problem. They are the same as the doors that featured in the BBC Watchdog programme concerning the IKEA kitchen Guarantee that was broadcast in May 2018. I have three questions: 1. How do I go about getting an independent report on the condition to send to IKEA to get them to honour their guarantee? 2. What would such a report be likely to cost? 3. Is it possible, and how easy/difficult would it be, to replace the IKEA tall cabinet doors with an alternative? The base cabinet and three drawer fronts would also need replacing, but I believe these are standard sizes - not sure whether the fittings are the same. All the doors cover the entire cabinet front. 4. Probably a "How long is a piece of string question" but would it be more economical to just get the doors replaced rather than getting an independent inspection report and trying to enforce the guarantee? Grateful for any advice.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If these are wall unit doors that have been directly above a heat/steam source i.e. kettle or toaster then I would just buy some replacements and be done with it. If the doors have just de-laminated over time then they are not fit for purpose and IKEA should definitely replace them f.o.c under their 25 year guarantee. If your range has been discontinued then they should replace all of your doors to match each other. Write to their head office and remind them of this. The small claims court, which is very user friendly and inexpensive, will find in your favour if it comes to that. Good Luck. Mike

You need to find out if ikea is a member of FIRA, an organisation that most kitchen companies are affiliated to to give an extra edge in guaranteeing their cabinets and doors etc,you could take your complaint to them! However, the previous answer is the most prudent route, as you would have a battle to prove that you took care of the doors. Guarantees are really not worth the paper they are written on as the cabinets/ drawers have a weight limit given, and a cleaning guide for the doors/ drawers, so there is always opposing views, should things go wrong after a period of time. I hope this helps Ian Spectrum Interiors

You could go back to IKEA. But the same thing will happen again. You could go and get new doors made by a door company.

I wouldn't buy a kitchen from Ikea. But you can get doors made to measure almost anywhere.
