Plastering & Rendering

Render (smooth white finish) over pebbledash

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.47 PM

Hi, We are planning to "smooth out" our pebbledash covered house back and front and before we talk with few trades people I would like to know a bit more so I know which one knows what they are talking about and I can trust them. I like to do my bit of research as well. After initial few conversations some already suggested it can be done straight on the pebbledash with one layer of standard cement render and then painted over. They say cement is breathable and all that. Looking on-line I am not so sure that's the way to go... They say they always do it this way. Found also something like this EWI-065 One Coat Dash Cover. Quite expensive but is it much different from cement or just marketing fluff and a basic thing inside you pay extra for. It's an end of terrace 1930s house! Solid like the bricks it's built with. Thanks for all advice.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

It depends on the soundness of the existing render and the type of paint coating it. The new render will have to 'stick' to the paint, not the older render. If the old render has ANY failures at all, it will induce failure of the new render very quickly too. Better to take it off and start again. I favour roughcast over smooth render anyway, much better weathering properties. What type of house is it? Age, construction type? It would have originally had a lime-rich roughcast render over brick cavity walls built using lime mortar. They are commonly re-rendered using cement mortar and, if they aren't subject to high levels of moisture, will function fine. But the render is still best coming off first. My own preference - keep the roughcast.

I would 100% without any doubt in my mind remove the existing render and start from scratch

To be honest i would scuff the pebble dash over removing almost all of the stone / proud stone, then i would go ahead with the new render.

My own preference would be as follows, 1) Hammer test existing roughcast, 2) Remove any Bose Roughcast 3) Apply a coloured Scratch Render System, various colours available Coated out to 18mm, scratched back to 16mm. I would discourage going with white as it can get very dirty through time. Done properly and to specifications and your guarantee will be okay
