Window frame extensions/packers

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.01 PM

We had windows replaced in march and think the surveyor messed up with measurements for our bay windows. He didn't remove architrave to check or measure (check-reveal) and measured from timber to timber instead of brick to brick. After asking for the surveying notes we noticed he only took dimensions from the inside and added 10mm as overall dims. He then ordered smaller frames (40mm smaller all around) and added extension frames of 20mm for head, bottom and R/L jambs After installation you can clearly see they're not centred from the inside: left window: 20mm packer / frame / 10mm packer middle window: 10mm packer / frame / 8mm packer right window: 8mm packer / frame / 20mm packer Should packers be visible or they should sit behind the reveal? We also think this affected the acoustic properties of our new windows, as they let the noise through more than our old upvc ones. Thank you!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Frame packers/extensions should only be used behind the plaster line so as not seen From inside but bay or bow windows are normally surveyed from inside and the height from outside

It sounds like you originally had box sash vertical sliding windows or windows lined inside with timber reveal and architrave. Most manufacturers of windows have different sizes of outer frame available, ie 56mm, 70mm & 85mm, this eliminates the use for add ons, frame extensions etc. The need for (packers, frame extensions should be used minimally and trimmed over to finish. The surveyor should have taken internal and external sizes and figured out what frame size should be used.

No,there’s are many reasons why he would use a frame add on and without seeing the installation is impossible to pass comment. as for the noise this could be poor installations or poor fabrication again it’s easy to run down someone’s work. The man is a professional (hopefully anyway) and would do the job to the best of his abilities and knowledge. Before we all condemn him to hell u should invite him back to explain why your bay is the way it is

On sectional Bay windows all measurements and angles are done from the inside, with the exception being the height, usually done from the outside after any architraves are removed. The plaster is usually chipped off to expose the back edge of the original frame, the measurements are then confirmed. Problems can occur when the window being measured is not the original and therefore was not a built-in window, frame extensions to left and right window jambssare standard practice, and are normally tried over to finish off.
